Should The Giants Worry About Tim Lincecum?

Is Tim Lincecum in a funk or is it something that the Giants should seriously worry about? Lincecum’s last three starts have been bad by most starting pitcher’s standards and horrible by the lofty standards that the reigning two time Cy Young winner has set. In his last three starts, Lincecum has not gotten out of the 6th inning and has given up 5, 6, and 3 earned runs. While some believe that his small frame and awkward delivery may be taking its toll, I believe it is just a small blip on a career that will continue to astonish. Lincecum has toyed with a new pitch this season, a changeup, that he is starting to throw too much. Early in the year, when Lincecum was his usual dominant self, he was throwing the changeup sparingly and had great results. Due to the success that he had with the pitch, he began to fall in love with it and has forgotten what made him such a great pitcher in the past. If Lincecum only sparingly uses his changeup, the two time Cy Young winner will be fine and Giants fans will have no need to worry.

Lincecum returning for Wild showdown

Tim Lincecum believes that the Giants need added motivation as they cling to the fringes of postseason contention.

“We’ve been pretty lax the last couple of days,” Lincecum said on Sunday, after the Giants lost the first two games of their critical series against the Los Angeles Dodgers by a combined score of 19-4. “I think it’s time for something to kick us in the butt. … We have to turn something on. This is where it counts.”

Lincecum might help provide that spark. The right-hander, who missed his last start with back spasms, will start Monday night’s series opener against the Colorado Rockies, who lead San Francisco by 4 1/2 games in the National League Wild Card race.

Lincecum’s rare struggle not a concern

Heat and humidity were cited as a possible cause of Tim Lincecum’s noticeable drop in velocity during Tuesday’s game.

Lincecum endured a rare bout of ineffectiveness in the Giants’ 8-5 triumph. He worked six innings and allowed all of Cincinnati’s runs, matching a season high. He also struck out a season-low two batters.

Scouts noted that Lincecum’s fastball barely exceeded 90 mph, more than 5 mph below its usual speed, and that his offspeed pitches also traveled more slowly and had less bite.
